Walk out of the Apple Store on Bethesda Avenue this week and turn toward the Metro plaza out of habit. You'll hit a chain-link fence instead. The Bethesda station is closed through September 6, along with Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore, and free shuttle buses are running every five to eight minutes between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights in place of trains. That single disruption is reshaping foot traffic through downtown at the exact moment the neighborhood's restaurant scene is reshuffling itself, and the two things are happening close enough together that they're worth understanding as one story, not two.
Start with what left. Tia Queta, the Mexican restaurant that had been a Bethesda fixture since 1981, closed its doors on January 31 after more than four decades in business. Mayflower, open on Norfolk Avenue for more than 20 years, went dark in May. A restaurant that lasts two decades in downtown Bethesda has usually done it on regulars rather than tourists, and when a place like that closes, it isn't just a vacant storefront. It's someone's standing Friday reservation with nowhere to go.
Where everyone went instead
The replacements aren't scattered randomly across downtown. They're clustering inside a walkable few blocks of the Woodmont Triangle, around Fairmont, Norfolk, and St. Elmo avenues, while Bethesda Row a few blocks south is filling in with apparel and wellness instead of dinner tables.

Six Ways to Sunday is the one worth knowing the backstory on. Chef Satang Ruangsangwatana, who lives in Silver Spring, ran the Fat Nomads food truck out of Kensington with her partner, chef Lekki Limvatana, from 2017 until September 2025. The Norfolk Avenue space sat vacant for years while the pair worked through construction delays and expired permits before finally opening in May. The menu leans into dishes inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown night markets, Cantonese steak with a Shaoxing wine sauce, Sichuan duck confit, and a Sunday brunch built around a Thai omelet rice dish. It is not the Americanized Thai food most of Bethesda is used to, and that's the point.
The Food Market is the other anchor worth noting for scale. Chef Chad Gauss, who already runs locations in Baltimore and Columbia, built the Bethesda dining room to seat 100 people, plus 16 at the bar and 40 more on a covered patio. Gauss has said Bethesda felt "welcoming, friendly, clean and approachable," which is the kind of assessment that reads like marketing copy until you notice he's had 14 years to change his mind about opening here and didn't.
Bethesda Row went quiet on dinner, loud on errands
If you've noticed Bethesda Row feels different this summer, that's not imagined. The wellness brand ALO opened its first Montgomery County location there in a space on Woodmont Avenue. Collars & Co, the menswear brand known from its Shark Tank appearance, opened its flagship store on June 10. Johnnie-O opened its first Maryland location in May. None of that is food. The dining energy that used to define a Friday night on Bethesda Avenue has largely relocated three blocks north, and what's replacing it on Bethesda Row is closer to a Saturday errand circuit, apparel and coffee rather than reservations.
The one exception on that side of downtown is Agora, and its location is a small irony worth sitting with. The restaurant opened touting its spot beneath the Hyatt Regency as putting a full Mediterranean dinner within steps of the Red Line turnstiles. That pitch made sense when it was written. It's less useful right now, because the Red Line isn't stopping at Bethesda at all until September 6.
The shuttle stop is not where the Metro entrance was
This is the part of the story that's easy to miss if you're not walking through it daily. WMATA's replacement shuttles don't use the old station entrance. The temporary northbound stop is on Wisconsin Avenue at East-West Highway, and the southbound stop is on Wisconsin Avenue at Montgomery Avenue, both a block or more from where the Metro escalator used to let you off. If you've been timing a dinner reservation around catching the Red Line home, or telling out-of-town guests to meet you "at the Metro," that meeting point doesn't exist right now. The Bethesda Circulator is still running its normal route for shorter hops within downtown, which is the more reliable option until service resumes.
The practical read here is that a first-time visitor to Agora or Daily Provisions right now is walking to a shuttle stop that didn't exist a few months ago, past storefronts that didn't exist much longer than that. The buildings housing Agora, Daily Provisions, and The Food Market are all ground floors of apartment towers that were still under construction not long ago. If you've been avoiding the Wisconsin Avenue corridor because it read as a permanent construction zone, that reason is running out.
What's still running on its own clock
Not everything downtown is in flux. The Friday night concert series at Bethesda Row continues weekly through September 18, running 6 to 8 p.m., and it pairs naturally with the new restaurant options a block away since drinks purchased at a participating restaurant can be carried to the show, though nothing bought elsewhere can. Saturday mornings still bring the lululemon Summer Series and Be Well at Bethesda Row fitness classes to the sidewalks around Bethesda Avenue, generally starting between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.
The farmers markets are also holding their usual rhythm. Bethesda Central Farm Market runs Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Bethesda Elementary School parking lot on Arlington Road through late December, with more than 100 vendors on a given week. A few miles south in Chevy Chase, the market outside the Village of Friendship Heights Village Center runs Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round, which makes it one of the few options in the area that doesn't pause for winter.
Before the shuttle buses go away
The next few weeks are a specific window. The Metro is scheduled to reopen September 6, and the Friday concert series wraps up September 18, while Taco Bamba has only a fall window rather than a firm date and Call Your Mother and Daily Provisions remain unconfirmed altogether. If you've been putting off checking out the Woodmont Triangle because it felt like a construction detour, this is the stretch where the shuttle stop, the concert series, and the new dinner options are all still overlapping in the same few blocks. Once the trains are back and the temporary stops disappear, so does the reason to notice how much has actually changed underfoot.
