Fort Washington & Oxon Hill

Rapidly developing neighborhoods featuring more affordable housing.

Welcome to Fort Washington and Oxon Hill

Quiet charms found close to the Harbor and Old Town Alexandria

On the shores of the National Harbor, just mere miles from the heart of the United States capital, Fort Washington and Oxon Hill are rapidly developing neighborhoods featuring more affordable housing than some nearby communities. Fort Washington and Oxon Hill are close to major highways and other vibrant areas such as Old Town Alexandria and National Harbor.

Named for a major DC fort protecting the Potomac River and the 18th century home of English physician Thomas Addison, the communities are now home to several large parks, outdoor recreational sites, and significant locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Colonial-style homes and an abundance of newly built stores have brought appeal and convenience to the edges of one of DC’s most popular places to call home.

What to Love

  • Abundance of newly built homes at better prices than some other nearby communities
  • Adjacently located to several major freeways
  • Close to vibrant Old Town Alexandria and the National Harbor entertainment hub
  • Just minutes away from central DC

Local Lifestyle

An abundance of new construction within the community has provided spacious housing options for more fair prices than other parts of the city. National Harbor, positioned on the banks of the Potomac, is now a vibrant gathering point featuring dining, shopping, a casino, river cruises, and opportunities to immerse yourself in national history. Parks and working farms are popular places to enjoy fresh air and the great outdoors, while anything else one could ever want or need is within arm’s reach.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Classy and stylish soul food is the specialty of Clout. Old-fashioned favorites and southern hospitality have melded with modern techniques to help build a strong reputation within Fort Washington. A swanky site with a full bar serves down-home staples like saucy wings, pork chops, oxtail, and Impossible burgers when they aren’t hosting vibrant events like live music performances, jazz brunches, and comedy nights.

More elevated Southern fare is presented at Succotash. Signature southern flavors accent the Korean roots of James Beard Award-winning chef Edward Lee at this Potomac Riverfront gem. Smoked wings, deviled eggs, and fried green tomatoes are just a few classic staples served alongside more modern creations like chicken and waffles and Nashville-style hot chicken.

Within the heart of National Harbor, Bond 45 is an old-world spot for high-end steak, seafood, and panoramic Potomac views. Within walking distance to the Convention Center, this classy atmosphere serves filet mignon, calamari, seafood ravioli, and other delicacies for any occasion.

Most notably, Fort Washington and Oxon Hill are adjacently located to MGM National Harbor. This luxury resort is home to fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and a casino, all just minutes from the nation’s capital. A relatively recent addition to DC 's exterior, the resort is an epicenter for nightlife, live music, and relaxation.

Things To Do

First constructed in 1863, Fort Foote Park was an essential defense effort for Washington, DC, during the Civil War and both World Wars. Today, the park spans across approximately 76 acres of extensively developed Potomac shoreline featuring unmatched beauty and monuments of original artillery. Oxon Cove Park and Oxen Hill Farm display a diverse array of history and Mid-Atlantic heritage. A living farm museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to several activities for the whole family, such as hiking, biking, and almost 300 acres of green space and museums.

Schools

This developing community is home to several wonderful educational opportunities for young children. Just one shining example is:

  • Fort Washington Forest Elementary School, prekindergarten-6th grade; a low student-teacher ratio, diverse student body, and active parent-teacher association have made a great impact on the lives of local students
