American University & Tenleytown

Offers anything anyone could ever need within an arm’s reach.

Welcome to Tenleytown

The capital city’s oldest and most friendly neighborhood

Home to the prestigious American University, a leader among Washington, DC educational institutions, Tenleytown is the city’s oldest neighborhood which has grown into an epicenter of urban conveniences, friendly neighbors, and scenic parks. A mix of federal-style architecture and new condominium developments have brought historic sites into the future, with timeless remnants of old-fashioned charm.

In 1790, locals called the area “Tennally’s Town” after the owner of the community tavern. The spelling evolved, as did the makeup of the neighborhood. Today, this close-knit community perched upon the highest hill in DC offers anything anyone could ever need within an arm’s reach. With the White House, the Capitol, and dozens of other iconic sites just minutes away, Tenleytown is a community where one can truly experience it all.

Local Lifestyle

Tenleytown is one of Washington, DC’s most convenient places to call home. Anything not located within the neighborhood is a short drive away. Tree-lined residential streets lead to Wisconsin Avenue’s many restaurants, shops, and a centrally located Metro station. This highly walkable corridor has drawn folks from all walks of life, thanks to the efforts of Tenleytown Main Street. Local events, revitalized parks, and a small-town vibe with urban amenities have resulted in a higher quality of life for those who call Tenleytown home.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Spanish-style tapas and an exquisite Mediterranean spread are served at Barcelona Wine Bar on bustling Wisconsin Avenue. The authentic ambiance and a comforting atmosphere is the background where traditional paella, vibrantly seasoned empanadas, lamb, and hanger steak, among other authentic Spanish specialties, are enjoyed. Barcelona Wine Bar features one of the nation’s greatest collections of Spanish wines, with over 400 bottles to choose from.

Crisp & Juicy is one of the community’s more down-home, laid-back joints for fried chicken and Peruvian comforts. Appearing as a bit of a hole-in-the-wall from the outside, Crisp & Juicy has been a neighborhood favorite since 1989. Moist, rotisserie chicken is sold by the whole, half, quarter, or as part of a family-style platter. A signature sauce, fried yuca, and plantains are popular sides at this unsuspecting neighborhood gem.

Wagshal’s Market is an old-fashioned butcher and grocery counter carrying modern treats and gourmet deli dishes. Particularly well-known for their brisket sandwiches, Wagshal’s has been a staple since 1925. Their several locations within DC offer kosher meats, fresh Atlantic seafood, and homemade desserts perfect for any occasion, no matter how large or small.

Established by Istanbul natives in 2016, Olive & Loom was inspired by the storied Turkish baths and luxuries of the Ottoman Empire. Brightly colored fabrics, olive oil soaps, plush robes and towels, and elevated pantry additions make for perfect gifts or upscale additions to your own collection. Olive & Loom also supports a sister business, Kin & Care, creating small-batch candles hand-poured by refugee women.

Things To Do

The highest point in Washington, DC is home to multiple scenic beauties and conservation sites. American University’s Arboretum and Gardens boasts over 4,000 trees and 385 species and varieties of plants spread across 84 glorious acres. Nearby, The Rosedale Conservancy is a privately maintained park, open to the public. With a history dating back to 1740, Rosedale is held to higher standards than other green spaces. A true gem, Fort Reno is home to colonial residences, horseback riding, nature adventures, and hosts multiple events. Going back to American University, the Katzen Arts Center is a visual and performing arts space encapsulating 130,000 square feet.
